Mellor J.F.C. Festival Of Football 2013
The Mellor J.F.C. Festival Of Football was held in glorious sunshine over the weekend of 6th and 7th July 2013, with the Under 11 section being held on the morning of the 6th. Prepared for a 6-a-side tournament, 12 lads attended to make up two teams for Wilpshire Wanderers, however at the manager's briefing it was decided to switch to 7-a-side. Consequently the lads got to play a bit more football and there was a Wilpshire Wanderers team playing at all times throughout the league stages. It had to happen though, one side won their league section with 3 wins, while other was runner-up in their section with a win, a draw and a loss, which meant a Wilpshire Wanderers v Wilpshire Wanderers semi-final. It was back to 6-a-side for the semi-final (since we only had 12 players!) and 2 evenly matched sides ensured a close game. It was a shame that one team had to lose!
The final was against Langho Juniors Blue and as a result of some silly mistakes and looking a bit weary, Wilpshire Wanderers quickly found themselves 3–0 down. However the lads battled on, pulled a goal back but then missed a penalty a couple of minutes from the end. Had that gone in, who knows what would have happened, but it didn't and Langho Juniors Blue ran out worthy 3–1 winners.
The tournament was very well organised, great fun to play in and we extend our thanks to Mellor J.F.C. for putting on a great Festival of Football.

Wilpshire Wanderers Blue played three games in the league stage, winning one 2–0 and drawing the other two 0–0. This produced a semi-final clash against Morecambe Hawks and Wilpshire Wanderers Blue won a fiercely contested game 2–1. The final, against AFC Clayton, produced an end-to-end game with Wilpshire Wanderers Blue running out 2–0 winners. Congratulations to all the lads.

It's been a case of "always the bridesmaid" for Wilpshire Wanderers Under 9 Blue this season – runners-up in the Accrington League, the Cup and now runners-up in a well organised and well executed tournament at Mellor. Finishing second (again!) in the league stage, Wilpshire Wanderers Blue met Mellor Juniors, who had topped the league, in the final. The two finalists had met in the league stage and had battled out a 0–0 draw so it was going to take something special to separate the teams in the final. Over the course of the match Wilpshire Wanderers Blue probably edged it in terms of possession but it's goals that count and Mellor scored a cracker in the second-half, the ball being slammed into the net from 20 yards. Although Wilpshire Wanderers Blue applied pressure up to the final whistle, resolute defending by the Mellor team kept them out and when a sizzling free-kick was cleared off the line Wilpshire Wanderers had to accept that this was not to be their day. Final score: Mellor Juniors 1 Wilpshire Wanderers Blue 0.
