Wilpshire Wanderers Football Club Raises £8000 at Sportsperson's Dinner

On the 26th November, 250 guests including Coaches, players, parents and sponsors attended the club's 14th Annual Sportsperson's dinner at Ewood Park. Former professional footballer Dean Saunders was the guest speaker alongside Comedian Austin Knight.

The night, hosted by MC Andy Ashworth, raised funds through a live auction, ticket sales, silent auction and various prize draws. Each year the club make a donation to local chosen Charity Child Action North West based in Wilpshire. Wilpshire Wanderers FC, established in 1997, currently has 22 teams from U7s up to under 18s and also provides Saturday morning development football at Salesbury Memorial Hall for children from the age of 4. The club have 340 players registered for the 2021/22 season.
With the Sportsperson's dinner not going ahead in 2020, due to the coronavirus pandemic, club chairman Steve Frost said it was a welcome relief to see everybody back together again amongst friends.
"Our last two major awards evenings, which we also hold at Ewood Park, have also been cancelled, so this evening allows the club to acknowledge a few special awards as part of the night."

Wilpshire Parish Shield Award
The shield was donated to the club by the Wilpshire Parish Council in 2012. The Shield is awarded each year to a person who has made a contribution other than footballing excellence. It might be to a parent who over several years has shown exceptional commitment in helping run a team, or to someone who has had a major influencing developing the facilities at the club. There are no set criteria but the of course the contribution must be outstanding. Two Parish Shield Award awards were given out on the night with Martin James receiving the award for 2020 and Duncan Bond for 2021.

Ronnie Clayton Player of the Year Award
Wilpshire Wanderers were honoured to have Ronnie Clayton as their club president. He was a tremendous ambassador throughout his career with both Blackburn Rovers and England. Ronnie gave this award in 2004 to be presented to a player whose contribution both on and off the pitch reflects Ronnie's own loyalty, commitment, enthusiasm and, of course, ability.
Under 18 Player Brad Hargreaves who has been with the club since the age of 4 was presented with the award for the 2020/21 season. Brad has made nearly 500 appearances for Wilpshire over the years.
The 2019/20 award winner, Jack Williams, received his replica trophy.

Long Service Awards
Awarded to players who have reached the age of 16 and have remained with the club for a substantial period representing a great display of loyalty.
Under 18 Black – Thomas Dagnall, Declan Hammond, Harry Pope and Jack Williams

Under 18 Blue – Max Almond, Joseph Bond, Harry Clark, Archie Farquhar, Brad Hargreaves, Sasi Kartickeyan, Benji Maher, Connor March, Dan Rawson, Theo Salter, Cameron Walmsley and Jack Wilson.
